The Lindemann Performing Arts Center
Brown University
Information

The Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University is not just a performance venue—it is a research laboratory for the arts. Designed by REX Architects, and opened in 2023, The Lindemann’s innate flexibility positions the building itself as an active collaborator in the creative process. The Lindemann’s main performance space can be transformed into five distinct configurations via moveable walls, depending on the needs of the performance and the size of the audience. The main hall’s surfaces, from the seating on the floor and balconies to the acoustic curtains, can be manually and automatically positioned to best support each configuration’s technical and programmatic needs. Additional spaces include a rehearsal hall; “labs” for movement and performance; practice rooms; outdoor gathering and performance space; and a cantilevered lobby that features artist Leo Villareal’s site-specific LED light sculpture Infinite Composition, which is visible from both inside and outside the building.

The Lindemann is a beacon on campus, providing what Brown describes as “an infusion of soul-sustaining light.” In designing the bespoke wayfinding, signage, and donor recognition system, Studio Loutsis conceptually and literally harnessed the power of this light, transforming functional signage into a quiet yet compelling exploration of illumination, shadow, reflection, translucency, and weightlessness. By being introduced to the project very early in the design process and forming an extraordinarily close collaborative relationship with REX architects, we seamlessly integrated our work into both the interior and exterior architecture of the building, creating a wayfinding system that is understated yet intuitive and clear for the user.

In keeping with the vision for this project as a laboratory for the arts, Brown embraced innovation throughout the design and fabrication process. This spirit of openness gave Studio Loutsis the opportunity to work with myriad experts from a variety of trades ranging from furniture design to elevator vendors. In particular, we partnered with the signage fabricator from the design development stage, allowing us to completely customize every signage solution with the resources of their engineers.
